How should I safely dispose of my household hazardous waste?
The weather is starting to warm up, which means spring cleaning is right around the corner. There is no better feeling than smelling the fresh air circulate through your home, and purging all the unnecessary items you’ve been collecting over the year. Most of the cleaning is self-explanatory. Donate old clothes, throw out broken toys; but what about old batteries? Or fluorescent lightbulbs?
Did you know it’s against the law in the state of Massachusetts to throw fluorescent lightbulbs in your trash can? Thankfully, there are many local Safe Mercury Disposal sites throughout the Commonwealth. While some may be at your local Department of Public Works, many are at hardware stores such as ACE or Home Depot. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has provided an interactive map to allow users to find the closest Safe Mercury Disposal Site, with additional information on what they will take and their hours of operation.
