Lowell was incorporated in 1823 as a planned manufacturing center for textiles. Located along the Merrimack River, Lowell’s location was perfect for constructing mills, canals and factories. Lowell thrived during the 1800’s but by the 1920’s the city fell into a deep decline. Its factories became deserted and only three of its major textile companies continued to run.

In the 1970’s Lowell became part of the Massachusetts Miracle, a period of economic growth centered around high tech industry and finance. Lowell developed its own cultural focus plan and created many annual festivals, the Lowell Spinners and the Wang Center. It is also home to UMass Lowell and Middlesex Community College. Many of the old Textile Mills have been preserved and made into museums and condos.
