Originally part of Groton, Ayer was settled in 1667 when its first mill was constructed. When the railroad was constructed in Ayer, the result was a very rapid population increase. Ayer is home to 4 public schools as well as a long list of properties on the National Register of Historic places; including Community Memorial Hospital, Ayer Main St. Historic District, Pleasant St. School, Fort Devans and St. Andrews School. In 1935, Ayer built the largest Nordic ski jump in North America. Measuring 700 ft. high, the structure lasted a single winter season before being destroyed by wind in the summer of 1936.
