Back in its earliest days of settlement, John Pynchon purchased the land from the Norwottuck Tribe. Named after Jeffrey Amherst, a hero in the French Indian War, Amherst has been a thriving community for over 250 years. The town is home to Amherst College, Hampshire College and UMASS Amherst. It was also home to famous Emily Dickinson who was born and raised in the town as well as Robert frost who lived in Amherst and taught at UMASS. Amherst is a lively town full of artists and intellectuals, in this town not only will you find a bustling college town, but also the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the Emily Dickinson Museum.
