Controlled Explosions in the Commonwealth

Margot Tank Services

In the state of Massachusetts, there is a niche business of Hazardous Waste Transportation and Disposal. Companies in the Commonwealth take on a great responsibility of safely packing hazardous materials and bringing them to facilities where they are properly contained and disposed of. It’s a dirty and dangerous job, but someones got to do it!

Four times a year, I get the privilege of attending regulation and safety meetings with the State Department. There I meet people from other companies in the district who come for the same reason. To keep up to date on the newest regulations, technologies and methods of disposal. At one of these meetings I was fascinated with a story from a gentleman who had been in the business for over 30 years.  He had come across old chemicals in mason jars that if moved too violently, would combust, meaning they cannot be transported. He was witness to a controlled explosion, in the parking lot, of the building where they were found. He said that these kinds of events are very rare and dangerous, so to watch one was exciting for him.

The crew handling the event in the article below used their expertise to identify a dangerous situation and followed procedures to quickly contain the hazard. These people are true professionals at work.
